Sir Alex Ferguson has offered his verdict on the hotly contested Premier League title race between Manchester City and Liverpool this season.

Liverpool climbed back to the top of the table after their 2-0 victory over Chelsea at Anfield, which included Mohamed Salah scoring an absolute screamer against his former club.

With only two points separating both teams — City having a match in hand — there’s no doubt that Reds supporters and City fans are on the edge of their seats.

Well, the former Manchester United manager believes that Jürgen Klopp’s men would come out on top.

That’s according to Jonathan Walters, who revealed that the legendary Scotsman has backed Ole Gunnar Solskjær’s men to pick up a result in the Manchester derby next week.

“I was chatting with Phil Bardsley and I’m going to drop a name here: he was sat with Sir Alex Ferguson,” he told BBC Radio 5 Live’s Football Daily.

“He sat with him and he thinks Liverpool are going to win it. He thinks Liverpool because he thinks United will get something out of the City game.”

It’s not only Klopp and Pep Guardiola who are feeling how tight the title race will be this season.

Following City’s 3-1 win over Crystal Palace on the weekend, Raheem Sterling suggested that the reigning Premier League champions would be pushed to the limits by Liverpool until the end of the season.

“Yes, 100 per cent, the way Liverpool have been playing it will go down to the wire,” he said.

“I don’t see us slowing down now. Liverpool have a great squad, great self-belief, but so do we.”

Salah, on the other hand, is sure that City will drop points before the end of the season.

“We just need to focus on our game and hope Manchester City will lose points,” he told Sky Sports.

“I did follow Man City to see the result — it can help us, but also it can push us to perform better.

“You need to score, you can’t lose any points, I knew the result of Manchester City‘s game.”
