Ronald Koeman believes that his time coaching Barcelona is not at ‘the end’, and criticised the ‘level’ of the Blaugrana squad after the curtain fell on a tumultuous season in Catalonia.
Barça ended the 2020/21 campaign with an unspectacular 1-0 victory over Eibar, and had to watch ex-Barça man Luis Suarez clinch the Liga title for Atletico Madrid. Results in recent weeks meant that Koeman’s side were not involved in the battle at the top, as they’ve once again allowed the trophy to head to Madrid.
The pressure is on Koeman in Catalonia, and with the changing of club president earlier in the season, his job could be on the line. But the Dutchman is remaining ‘calm’ over his position as Barcelona coach, and stated at the final whistle that he believes ‘it’s not the end’ of his time there, as cited by Marca.
“I think it’s not the end. I have a contract and, I don’t know…you talk a lot about it, but I’m calm. If the club wants to change something, they have to talk to me.”
Koeman also spoke at length about the quality of the Barça squad he inherited in the summer, stressing that the group of players are ‘not at the level’ that the club requires, and claimed that they are ‘trying to improve’ the levels in the summer.
“During the season, the hopes were too high, but that’s the way it is. That’s how I see it, that’s why I think It is not a bad season, far from it. It is not the best possible season, but you cannot ask for a double every year or a double from a team that is forming.
“At the moment we arrived, the squad was decided. The only signing we made was Dest, on the last day. This squad is not formed, in every way, at the level that we want to have at Barça. Many at the club think similarly.
“We are trying to improve the squad. There are older players, with all due respect, who have shown that they have the level for this team. Others, younger, need to gain experience and will be better players. The squad is not complete and cannot be formed in a single season.”
Barça’s difficult financial situation means that big-money signings are unlikely this summer, as they try to revolutionise their squad for another title battle.
