Twitter reacts as Chelsea & PSG progress to semi finals at expense of Bayern Munich & Porto

Another Tuesday, another night of undiluted Champions League drama.

We now know that Paris Saint-Germain will meet either Borussia Dortmund or Manchester City in the semi finals, after they banished the ghosts of last season’s final by defeating Bayern Munich.

Elsewhere, Chelsea beat Porto in a game that had little for the neutrals to enjoy until the final seconds.

In Paris, things got off to a captivating if not overtly dramatic start. Things really clicked into gear just before the break when Neymar hit the crossbar and then the post in very quick succession.

Forget the scoreline. Watching Neymar in this form is just..

— AFCAMDEN (@AFCAMDEN) April 13, 2021

neymar hitting the bar then the post…

— amke (@marcxney) April 13, 2021

Mbappe and Neymar are an utter joy to watch as a neutral when the scoreline means nothing to you

— Layth (@laythy29) April 13, 2021

Neymar absolutely toying with Bayern defenders but failing to score 3 big chances makes you wonder doesn’t it.

Sometimes the hardest skill to execute in big games is to take your opportunities and seal the wins.

Underrated ability by many.

— ᴀ. (@GreatWhiteNueve) April 13, 2021

I can’t help but feel that Neymar should have scored his chance

— Scott Saunders (@_scottsaunders) April 13, 2021

In classic Champions League fashion, seconds after Neymar’s second close shave, Bayern edged in front.

The scorer? None other than former PSG man Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting. Twitter was absolutely loving it.

Eric-Maxim Choupo Moting spent mid-August considering an offer from Serie B side Lecce – now he has as many goals in this 2-legged affair as Kylian Mbappé – football, like life, comes at you fast.

— Get French Football News (@GFFN) April 13, 2021

2 – Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting has scored more goals in his two Champions League appearances against PSG (two) than he scored in his 10 games for them in the competition (one). Stoked.

— OptaJoe (@OptaJoe) April 13, 2021

Choupo-Moting got relegated with Stoke City 3 years ago and here he is now scoring in back to back Champions League quarter final games. ??

— Footy Humour (@FootyHumour) April 13, 2021

Football is simply the craziest sport.

In a matter of seconds we go from Neymar hitting the post for the second time this game to Bayern scoring a crucial away goal.

This sport is just absurd. What a game we are witnessing.

— EiF (@EiFSoccer) April 13, 2021

No matter the result today, Choupo is goated for this. He took the responsibility on himself when the others couldn’t ✋

How it started | How it’s going

— B/R Football (@brfootball) April 13, 2021

Over at Stamford Bridge – sorry, we mean the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan Stadium – things were nowhere near as dramatic.

In fact, neither side even registered a shot on target before half time. Most of those who tuned in spent the first 45 minutes wishing they had opted for the Bayern game instead…

Chelsea are so boring to watch omds some boring football

— vlad (@vlad_WHU) April 13, 2021

The way Chelsea and Porto are willing to waste 90 minutes of my life watching them. Wey boring match this.

— kilow ♉? (@kilowchris) April 13, 2021

This game will have been very boring for the neutral which is absolutely perfect for us.

A better final ball from Kante and we’re 1-0 or 2-0 up.

Half way there. ?

— Chelsea Extra ? (@CFCExtra) April 13, 2021

Neither side has had a shot on target yet ?‍♂️

— Goal (@goal) April 13, 2021

Jorginho’s first half vs. Porto by numbers:

86% pass accuracy

75% long pass accuracy

57 total touches

7 tackles won

2 interceptions

2 clearances

A big contributor with and without the ball. ??

— Statman Dave (@StatmanDave) April 13, 2021

The second half was a similar story, with Paris seeing the lionshare of the drama. First, Neymar had a Gazza at Euro 96 moment, coming within centimetres of sliding home Angel Di Maria’s cutback.

Kylian Mbappe then had a goal ruled out for offside ten minutes from time, before the Bayern onslaught began. Despite all of their pressure, for once Hansi Flick’s side could not find a breakthrough and it was confirmed that Mauricio Pochettino would be returning to the Champions League semi-finals.

The implications of the result could be massive in Bavaria, as everyone was quick to point out on Twitter.

Disappointed in Bayern Munich’s performance on the night. Leroy Sane and Kingsley Coman were poor while Lewandolski and Gnabry were very much missed. PSG deserved to qualify over the two legs. #bbcfootball

— Sulaimon Adelekan (@Iamsulaimon) April 13, 2021

Hansi Flick was proven right, the Bayern board made a big mistake by not making key signings. It’s no wonder he’s so mad at them.

— Rafael Hernández (@RafaelH117) April 13, 2021

In 8 of the last 9 seasons, the team that won the Champions League was either Bayern Munich, or eliminated Bayern Munich ?

— ESPN FC (@ESPNFC) April 13, 2021

— Bleacher Report (@BleacherReport) April 13, 2021

At some point during this run, PSG have ‘avenged’ massive defeats from years gone by.

Beat Bayern, who beat them in the #UCL final last year, beat Barcelona after the Remontada & beat United after that 2019 comeback

— Tom Scholes (@_TomScholes) April 13, 2021

Over in Chelsea vs Porto, things were quiet until Mehdi Taremi treated us to a picture perfect overhead kick.

It’s just a shame it was in the 94th minute.

— Football on BT Sport (@btsportfootball) April 13, 2021

Fair play to Porto. Mehdi Taremi scored a worldie! ? #CHEPOR

— Ogello (@OgelloIsSaying) April 13, 2021

94 – Mehdi Taremi’s strike (93:01) was the latest Chelsea have conceded in a Champions League game (excluding extra-time) since April 2005 against Bayern Munich, when Mehmet Scholl scored after 94:55. Inconsequential.

— OptaJoe (@OptaJoe) April 13, 2021

— UEFA Champions League (@ChampionsLeague) April 13, 2021

Taremi’s goal did little to detract from Chelsea’s celebration though, with the Blues toasting their first semi-final appearance since 2014.

It also means that the first ever men’s and women’s double in the competition’s history is still on.

Both @ChelseaFC and @ChelseaFCW are through to the Champions League semi-finals! ?

— 90min (@90min_Football) April 13, 2021

?? ??? ?????. ?#CHEPOR

— Chelsea FC (@ChelseaFC) April 13, 2021

Thank you Frank for getting Chelsea through the group stages & thank you Tuchel for getting Chelsea to the Semi-final.. ?

— Conn (@ConnCFC) April 13, 2021

Wasn’t pretty, didn’t need to be. Job very well done, resilient and defiant in the face of a thuggish opponent. Cheers for coming Porto, Chelsea head to the Champions League Semi Finals!

— Simon Phillips (@siphillipssport) April 13, 2021

— BRGoals (@BRGoals) April 13, 2021

“Chelsea have no chance against Atletico Madrid”

“Chelsea will get humbled by Porto”

How about just accept we are a great team?
