Gareth Bale’s 100th goal for Real Madrid was certainly reason for the Welshman to celebrate last weekend, scoring his team’s third goal in the Madrid derby, but that celebration could land him in hot water.

Pretty much ever since moving to Real Madrid in 2013 Gareth Bale has been in the shadow of someone else. Usually it has been Cristiano Ronaldo but even recently Vinicius Junior seems to have left him behind.

The Welshman has suffered injuries whilst the young Brazilian has been on very good form so the former Spurs man has been left to wait his turn on the bench.

That was the case on Saturday in the Madrid derby as Real travelled to the Wanda Metropolitano to face Diego Simeone’s Atletico side.

The 29 year old came off the bench to bag himself a goal, make it 3-1 and secure the three points for Los Blancos however his celebration was apparently offensive.

Bale celebrated by raising one arm after hitting it with his other arm and it could lead to a suspension of up to 12 games after La Liga approached the Spanish FA and asked for him to be banned.

In a statement La Liga said, “In the celebration of Bale’s goal, he waves his right arm to the proximity of his head, in a predictable sign of encouraging provocation to the public, subsequently making a gesture of possible obscene and contemptuous meaning, raising the bent arm and hitting the middle of it with the other hand,”

“The possible sanctions for these provocations vary. If it occurs, the offender will be sanctioned with suspension of four to twelve games, if the animosity of the public, the suspension will be from one to three parties (games) or for a period of up to one month.

It seems unlikely that the Real winger will face the full 12 game ban in fairness but he could have to sit out a few games.

Bale has started 15 games in La Liga this season for the Champions League holders, scoring six goals and Real are now just six points behind rivals Barcelona in the league.

They’ve had their issues since Ronaldo and Zinedine Zidane left in the summer but Santiago Solari has started turning things around.

The manager will not want to be without Bale, certainly not for 12 games.
