Gerard Pique Is Better Than Virgil Van Dijk, According To Carles Puyol
Gerard Pique has had a career filled with silverware and doesn’t seem to be letting up anytime soon.
The 32 year-old Spanish defender seems to have been around forever, and has won the lot during his career.
Making his professional debut for Manchester United in 2004, Pique struggled to maintain a consistent first team spot. Sir Alex Ferguson had the fierce duo consisting of Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic, meaning the young Pique opted for a move back to Barcelona after four years at Old Trafford.
Pique has since gone on to win seven La Liga titles, six Copa del Reys, and three European cups with the Spanish giants.
Not to forget, he has also won the World Cup and European Championships with Spain, proving just how valuable he is.
Despite his trophy filled career, many football fans have failed to consider Pique as one of the best central defenders in recent times. Is this possibly down to the fact that he’s been surrounded by some of the world’s best players such as Messi, Xavi and Iniesta and in turn, Pique has been a little underrated?
But this opinion has been crushed by former Barcelona captain Carlos Puyol, who claims that Gerard Pique is the best defender in the world without a doubt.
When asked by Spanish publication MARCA in an interview who is the best defender in the world, he said:
“Gerard Pique without a doubt.”
The response was the same when asked who was better between Pique and Real Madrid rival Sergio Ramos.
Puyol himself was a very formidable defender but admitted that he thinks Pique is even better than he was at his peak.
“We are different. He is key to Barcelona in everything he contributes: his leadership, how he competes. He is a phenomenom.”
One thing is for certain, both defenders are of the highest quality.
Puyol certainly knows how good Pique is having played with him, as well as being one of best centre-backs in his time. Currently however, most football fans would choose the composed Van Dijk over Pique.
