Giorgio Chiellini’s Ridiculous Play Acting Reached A Whole New Level
Giorgio Chiellini is renowned for being a steely, tough-tackling central defender but he was guilty of some quite terrible play-acting last night.
The Italian was involved in a tussle with former teammate Alvaro Morata and ended up throwing himself to the ground not once but TWICE.
Morata did put his hands on him but Chiellini embarrassingly tried to get the Spaniard sent off with his theatrics. And he saved his worst (or best) dive for when he had later had an altercation Angel Correa.
Chiellini blocked the Argentine’s run when he was trying to nip in and get on the end of a back-pass but then tried to make out as he was the one fouled, rolling around like The Rock after a Stone Cold stunner.
This is a man who had Luis Suarez sink his teeth into him in the 2014 World Cup and yet he was responsible for some utterly atrocious simulation at the Allianz Stadium.
Suarez was hit with a nine-match international ban for biting Chiellini , as well as being banned from all football activity for fourth months – though the punishment was later lessened.
Last year, the Uruguayan revealed that he didn’t feel he could celebrate Diego Godin’s winning goal too much because he was already thinking about the sanction that was on the way.
“After that – after I did it – I realised immediately,” he told Gerard Pique via The Players’ Tribune.
“We score our goal a few minutes after, I think it’s about 10 minutes after when [Diego] Godín scores, and I don’t celebrate it as much as I usually would – the way everyone else celebrated it – because I was already thinking about the aftermath.”
Chiellini and Suarez buried the hatchet, even swapping shirts in a Champions League game in 2017 – and it seems as though the Bianconeri centre-back is now paying tribute by diving like him.
