Jurgen Klopp Was Interested In Signing Franck Ribery This Summer
Jurgen Klopp was interested in bringing free-agent Franck Ribery to Liverpool this summer.
The German boss was keen to snap up Ribery if any attacking players departed Anfield.
The 36-year-old is out of contract with Bayern Munich and Klopp was plotting a move for the Frenchman depending on what happened with his team.
But since there has been a lack of transfer activity with Liverpool, no place has been freed up for Ribery per French outlet L’Equipe.
The idea of Ribery plying his trade for Liverpool has split fans down the middle. Here’s some reaction from social media:
“Tbf would rather him as Mane’s back up than Kent,” one Twitter user wrote.
A second tweeted: “Liverpool ain’t a retirement home.”
A third added: “I know we want signings but god no.”
While another said: “Ribery is quality wouldn’t mind it.”
Liverpool have yet to secure a major signing this summer but Klopp is more focused on tying down his current players to long term deals.
“That’s actually our transfers, but nobody’s interested in hearing that really because that’s how it is,” he said.
“You have a player, he’s good, you want to keep him, if he signs a new contract then for a few people, it means only that he will be more expensive when we sell him or whatever, or that it doesn’t mean anything nowadays.
“In our case, these are our transfers. The new contracts and keeping these boys here is a strong, strong signal for the outside world.
“It’s wonderful sign, to be honest. I like the fact that these boys are really at a good football age. They won the European Cup, which is good and helps of course because it increases your base.”
Liverpool‘s only signing this window came in the shape of Dutch defender Sepp van den Berg, who joined the Champions League winners from PEC Zwolle for £1.3 million.
