Lionel Messi Has Scored 50+ Goals In Six Different Seasons
There was a time where most forwards would settle for 20-30 goals in a season it was previously viewed as a fine return, yet Lionel Messi has entered a whole new stratosphere with his numbers.
After his tidy brace in the final game of the season against Eibar today, which took him to 36 La Liga goals and secured his sixth Pichichi Trophy for finishing as the league’s top scorer, Messi has now scored at least 50 goals in six different campaigns.
Messi notched 53 goals in 2010/11 and followed it up a season later with an insane 73 in all competitions in what might just be the greatest individual campaign ever.
He then bagged 60 in 2012/13, 58 in 2014/15, 54 in 2016/17 and now a modest 50 in 2018/19, with next week’s Copa Del Rey final against Valencia still to play.
Just utterly absurd numbers from Messi. The player closest to his goals tally this term is Kylian Mbappe, who has 38, but Messi really is in a league of his own.
Along with his 50 goals, the five-time Ballon d’Or has laid on 20 assists for his Barcelona teammates and continues to be the greatest playmaker and goalscorer at the same time.
Fortunately it seems as though he’s still got a number of years but the day he decides to retire will be an incredibly sad one.
