Eric Bailly challenges Antony during Ivory Coast v Brazil at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo

Eric Bailly and Amad helped put Ivory Coast into a promising position in Group D of the men’s football section of the Olympic Games.

The Elephants line up pre-match in Japan.

Despite a controversial VAR decision leading to Aston Villa’s Douglas Luiz sending off in the first half, it was Brazil who came closer late on a tight game but Ivory Coast, led by 28-year-old Bailly, held on.

The stalemate leaves both sides on four points, with Brazil ahead in the group on goal difference. Ivory Coast now play Germany on Wednesday. If they can avoid defeat, they’ll progress into the knockout round.

United’s female representatives will be in action sooner than that, with Ella Toone’s Great Britain and Jackie Groenen’s Netherlands playing on Tuesday.
