David De Gea just pipped Edinson Cavani to our Man of the Match award after Manchester United qualified for the UEFA Europa League final on Thursday night.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men lost 3-2 to Roma at the Stadio Olimpico but the Reds’ 6-2 advantage from the semi-final first leg means United will play Villarreal in the Gdansk final on 26 May.
It was Edi who grabbed both goals in the Italian capital, but so impressive was David’s display he earned the recognition of our supporters, and 50 per cent of votes in our Man of the Match poll.
Throughout the second leg, the 30-year-old pulled off one impressive save after another and showcased his world-class ability and reflexes.

United skipper Harry Maguire was also delighted with his goalkeeper’s performance following Thursday night’s
“Obviously, David, as a central defender, I’m not that pleased he’s had that much to do,” the captain told BT Sport after the match.
“I’d much prefer him not to make a save but when he was there tonight and we needed him, he pulled off big saves in big moments and that’s what he’s done throughout his career.”
In second place, Cavani, as he did at Old Trafford a week ago, scored a brace against the Giallorossi and was understandably high in the voting. Our no. 7 received an impressive 43 per cent of the votes.
After two goals at the iconic Stadio Olimpico, the 34-year-old now has five goals in four Europa League outings for the club and 14 goals in total for the Reds since he joined the club in October 2020.
With 93 per cent of the votes split between De Gea and Cavani, it was really a two-horse race for the Man of the Match award. Their closest competitor was Bruno Fernandes, who registered an assist for the striker’s equaliser to make it 2-2 on Thursday night.
