Ole Gunnar Solskjaer hopes two or three players can be added to his Manchester United squad during the upcoming summer transfer window.

With one game to spare, the Reds have already secured the team’s highest final position under Solskjaer – second place – after previously finishing sixth and third.

However, Ole feels that making the next step and becoming champions in 2021/22 would be difficult without some new signings.

“As I’ve said a couple of times, I hope we can strengthen with a few,“ he said, during Friday’s pre-match press conference.

We definitely need two or three players to challenge higher up in the table. We’re still too far behind to think that it’ll come by itself.”

While naturally keeping his cards close to his chest in terms of details, the boss did reveal that plans to strengthen the squad are already in the pipeline and that deciding who to buy is not just a task that begins when the current campaign has ended.

“Of course, we’re planning as we normally do,” Solskjaer told reporters.

“It’s not like [only] at the end of the season we see what we’ll do. It’s an ongoing process, looking at the squad, at the players who are going to stay and the players who might be leaving.”

While the press conference was dominated by the upcoming Europa League final with Villarreal, as well as Sunday’s Premier League visit to Wolves and which players may or may not be fit for those contests, Ole was also pressed on potential United departures.

The boss has already admitted that goalkeeper Sergio Romero will not be offered an extension to his contract, and will therefore leave in the summer, but will he be joined by anyone else? And what will happen with the players who have impressed while on loan this season, such as Jesse Lingard and James Garner?

“We’ve had a few on loan who might come back in,” teased Ole.

“There might be interest in a few others maybe going out. We might allow some players to go out to gain experience and come back stronger for it.

“Apart from that, it’s difficult to say. But I can’t see too many outgoings.

“You want to come out of the window strengthened, that’s the thing.”
