Matthijs De Ligt Catches Can Thrown At Major Of Amsterdam
Ajax players were welcomed by 100,000 fans in Amsterdam this week as they celebrated their 34th Eredivise title.
Erik ten Hag’s side capped off a memorable season with a 4-1 win over De Graafschap on Wednesday night, a result that meant they pipped PSV to the post by just three points.
It has been an unforgettable campaign for these Ajax boys. As well as their league form, they reached the Champions League semi-finals after beating the likes of Real Madrid and Juventus along the way.
Players like Frenkie de Jong, David Neres and Dusan Tadic impressed throughout, but perhaps the biggest influence in this young and talented side was Matthijs de Ligt.
The 19-year-old centre-back captained his side through thick and thin, showing great composure in a number of high pressure situations. I mean, THE GUY IS 19 YEARS OF AGE!
De Ligt is a defending machine, both on and off the pitch. Why?
Because he managed to intervene after someone from the crowd threw a can of beer at the Major of Amsterdam during the title celebrations.
That’s right. Femke Halsema was about to give a rousing speech and someone threw a beer at her.
Thankfully the ever-vigilant centre-back was on hand to save the day.
Just check out Edwin van der Sar’s reaction to the below clip. He looks a tad embarrassed that he wasn’t the one who caught it.
So what next for the 19-year-old defender?
It looks like de Ligt could be heading to the Camp Nou this summer after reports suggest that Barcelona are on the verge of signing him.
According to Sport, Ajax director of football Marc Overmars has reportedly told Juventus director of football Fabio Paratici that the 19-year-old highly rated centre-back would be moving to the Spanish club.
CalcioMercato added that the Eredivisie side have ‘reminded’ Paratici the cost of the Ajax captain, with the La Liga champions ready to part with €80m for him.
In March, Overmars said that he loved Barcelona, but he was unsure if de Ligt, who has also been the target of Manchester City and Liverpool, could be following in the same footsteps of fellow teammate Frenkie de Jong and be heading to the club.
“I love Barcelona, but I do not know what he [de Ligt] will do,” he told TV3 at the time.
Barca have not only got themselves a fantastic player, but his incredible leadership qualities are perhaps his biggest trait.
Just check out his speech during the victory parade. Unbelievable.
