Mario Balotelli is expected to be out of action for 10 days because of the shoulder injury he sustained during Milan’s Champions League defeat by Atlético Madrid at San Siro on Wednesday.

The former Manchester City striker left the field clutching his right shoulder 12 minutes from the end and after medical tests on Thursday the Serie A club reported he had “damaged his acromioclavicular joint”.

He should be back in time for the return match on 11 March “if there are no complications” with Milan trailing 1-0 from the first leg, Diego Costa heading the winner for Atlético in the 83rd minute.

Milan’s Mattia De Sciglio also went off following a challenge by Emiliano Insúa in the first half. The defender has a sprained and bruised ankle and will undergo more tests.
