Steve Bruce’s eyeing up free-agent Andy Carroll in view to a sensational return to Newcastle United.

According to Telegraph, Newcastle are already in touch with Carroll’s team over a move following his release from West Ham.

The 30-year-old striker recently had surgery on his ankle and the Magpies are keeping tabs on his recovery ahead of potentially offering him a deal.

The Gateshead native enjoyed five seasons at Newcastle after graduating from the club’s youth academy.

He scored 31 league goals – including 17 in the Championship – before sealing a big-money switch to Liverpool in 2010.

But after 10 years away from St James Park, he could return this summer with Bruce keen on reinforcing his attack for the new season.

Carroll’s not the only striker on Newcastle’s radar. The club are closing in on the transfer of Brazilian striker Joelinton in a deal worth £35 million.

The Premier League outfit remain in the market for new talent and Bruce has assured Newcastle fans that he’ll be in charge of transfers this window.

“There have been a couple of things said – and the big one is whether I am going to sit here and be a puppet,” he said.

“That won’t happen – I am in charge of transfers. To say I won’t be in charge of recruitment has insulted me.

2Let me tell you, if I thought I couldn’t have control of transfers, then I wouldn’t be doing the job.

“We’ve talked about budgets and it was pretty straight forward.

“I think Mike has always been pretty straight about that – whatever the club brings in and whatever we generate by getting players out, we’ve got to spend.”

Bruce, meanwhile, watched his side beat West Ham in the Premier League Asia Trophy. They beat the Hammers 1-0 thanks to a first-half strike from Yoshinori Muto.

Newcastle return to pre-season action next Saturday when they face Preston North End.
