Neymar Criticises VAR Officials On Social Media Over Award Of Penalty
Manchester United dramatically overturned a 2-0 deficit to beat PSG in the Champions League thanks to a controversial penalty decision late in the game and Neymar took to social media to criticise the use of VAR.
In 106 previous attempts no team had ever overturned a 2-0 loss at home in the first leg of a European Cup or Champions League game. On Wednesday night Manchester United became the first to do so.
The Premier League side lost 2-0 at Old Trafford three weeks ago against PSG. Ahead of the second leg they were missing nine players through injury and Paul Pogba from suspension, after his first leg red card.
However Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side turned in a historic performance as Romelu Lukaku bagged two goals in the first half to give United hope. Juan Bernat’s goal meant that the Red Devils needed one to go through on away goals.
United did eventually get their goal but needed the help of the VAR officials as they spotted a supposed handball from Presnel Kimpembe. Marcus Rashford put the spot kick away to give United the unexpected win.
After the match PSG forward Neymar, who missed both legs through injury, took to Instagram to post his annoyance at the officials on his story to say:
“This is a shame. They put 4 guys who do not understand football to be watching in slow motion. This is surreal. How will the guy put his hand on his back? Oh f*ck off.”
VAR was only brought into the Champions League for the last 16 this season and it played its part on Tuesday night as well as Ajax scored a goal but Real Madrid claimed the ball went off the pitch in the build up.
The replay showed it was close but one angle suggested the ball went out but another had it staying on the pitch.
On Wednesday the controversy once again made a difference to deciding which team went through to the quarter finals and Neymar clearly couldn’t believe what he was seeing:
The Brazilian was famously on the other side of a famous comeback against PSG when his Barcelona team came back from 4-0 down in the first leg to win 6-1 in the Camp Nou to go through.
After yet another comeback against the Ligue 1 champions there will be many questions, most of them about VAR.
