Player Scores 92nd Minute Goal To Deny Father's Team A Play-Off Spot
Family and football collided over in Venezuela where Gianluca Maldonado scored a last minute goal that denied his dad’s team a spot in the play-off.
With Puerto Cabello, managed by Carlos Maldonado, leading Deportivo Tachira 2-1 in the Venezuelan top flight, son Gianluca popped up in stoppage time with a gorgeous curling strike.
But instead of celebrating a dramatic goal, he was in tears and covered his eyes with his shirt – because of the repercussions the goal had on his father.
It’s a rare and unusual situation that Gianluca found himself in but you can’t even say he had mixed feelings over the goal as he genuinely didn’t look like he was the slightest bit happy to score it.
In another strange story with mixed emotions, Henk de Jong, manager of De Graafschap, finds himself in a lose-lose situation on Wednesday night.
After his side finished in 17th place in the Eredivisie, the team are in the middle of a relegation semi-final play-off against Cambuur from the second tier of Dutch football.
But incredibly, he has already signed a deal to take over from Cambuur as boss next season and will therefore his team’s next opponents are his next employers.
Whoever prevails in the second leg will be playing in the top flight next season and it’s one of the most mad, awkward situations in recent memory.
