Blackburn Rovers ‘in Talks’ With Christian Walton
Experienced Championship ‘Keeper
The 23-year-old ‘keeper has been enjoying loan spells over the past two years at Wigan. During his time with the Latics, Walton helped them win the Sky Bet League One title in his first term; he also helped them avoid relegation from the second tier in his second year.
Blackburn are keen to bolster their goalkeeping options after allowing Spaniard David Raya to sign for Brentford. As a result, the Rovers have just one senior goalkeeper, Jayson Leutwiler.
Walton has made only four appearances for the Brighton academy since progressing through their youth ranks; however, the talented shot-stopper has gained plenty of experience outside of the Premier League in recent years.
His most successful loan spells occurred at Luton Town (33 games, nine clean sheets) and Wigan Athletic, with whom he made 30 clean sheets from 69 appearances across two years.
Speaking after a 1-1 draw at Rangers, Rovers boss Mowbray said that he hopes to add to his squad in the coming days.
“Hopefully we will sign two players tomorrow,” he said. “Until they are signed it’s never done but hopefully we’ll have some business concluded (on Monday).
“We work to a budget and, as I’ve done throughout my career, I’ve tried to stick to budgets.”
Two-Way Chase for Walton
Walton has enjoyed several impressive loan spells away from the coast over the past few years. His series of consistent high-level performances have led to a number of clubs looking to sign the 23-year-old.
A report by the Sun (via Derbyshire Live) stated that Derby County are keeping tabs on the Seagulls ‘keeper.
It adds that Derby could use Walton as a makeweight in a deal for Jayden Bogle, the right-back is ‘closing in’ on a £10 million move to Brighton.
