Mauricio Pochettino and Jurgen Klopp won’t have as many selection headaches for the Champions League final as teams will be allowed to name 12 substitutes on June 1st when the two sides meet in Madrid.

Somehow the Champions League final is still two weeks away. The domestic season still has plenty of action to go but after the drama of the semi finals we’re missing our fix of Europe’s elite competition.

For now Spurs and Liverpool just have to prepare the best they can for June 1st when they meet at the Wanda Metropolitano, home of Atletico Madrid.

Managers Mauricio Pochettino and Jurgen Klopp have to find the balance at training of keeping intensity up, not letting standards drop and making sure that players don’t get injured or too tired.

For some of the players they’ll be trying to impress the manager and force their way into the squad, or the team, for the final but they won’t want to get injured or injure anyone.

However everyone can relax a little because both managers will have more options available to them in Madrid.

According to The Times, UEFA have decided that, following on from a trial at last year’s European Super Cup, teams will be allowed to name 12 substitutes in the final.

The rule isn’t just a boost for Spurs and Liverpool but fellow Premier League sides Arsenal and Chelsea, with the rule also extending for the Europa League.

It means that Pochettino, Klopp, Unai Emery and Maurizio Sarri won’t have to agonise over who to put in the squad and who to leave out.

Depending on how far he comes in his recovery from injury the man who could benefit most is Harry Kane.

The Spurs striker has been out since the Champions League quarter final first leg against Manchester City and 12 subs means it’s more likely he’ll be in the squad, although he could still start too.

Klopp will be hoping that he doesn’t have to turn to his bench as early as he did in last season’s final, when Mo Salah was injured around the half hour mark.
