The Moment England Tried To Score While Croatia Celebrated
In a desperate bid to win last year’s World Cup semi-final, Gareth Southgate’s side tried to score while the opposition celebrated.
The below clip is just seconds after Mario Mandzukic’s winner in the 109th minute during Croatia’s 2-1 victory in Moscow.
It shows England’s players rushing to get on with things and try and force an equaliser while their opponents were still celebrating.
It was roles reversed three weeks before that defeat by Croatia when England played Panama.
Harry Kane scored the second from the spot with an emphatic penalty and every outfield player joined him in celebrating off the pitch.
Then, in a moment of madness, one Panama player grabbed the ball, raced up to the halfway line and took a kick-off.
It seems England tried to recreate that move when footage from the semi-final soon emerged of Marcus Rashford and Jesse Lingard trying to catch Croatia out on the break with an almost identical piece of play.
Croatia eventually went on to defend their lead, but the following footage was not broadcast on television.
Twitter user Vlasta Jeseničnik gave us a glimpse of what happened just seconds after the goal went in, as the United players sprinted to the centre circle.
It was a great start to the game for England fans. Kieran Tripper sent the country into meltdown when he scored a free-kick in the opening minutes.
But Zlatko Dalic’s side managed to claw their way back into the game thanks to Ivan Perisic’s toe punt.
Croatia’s hero of the hour, Mandzukic, then scored the winner, catching out the sluggish England defence.
