Any Manchester City players that do not like their role in the team may be better off leaving the club, according to Pep Guardiola.
City are on course to win multiple trophies this season, with a healthy lead in the Premier League and progression in the FA Cup, Carabao Cup, and Champions League. There are also plans to strengthen the squad for next season, with a marquee striker a priority as the club try to land the long-term successor to Sergio Aguero.
Guardiola is happy with the quality of everyone in his squad, and would be content to keep them all in the summer transfer window. However, he also acknowledged that some players may not be satisfied with their position in the squad and if they are not happy the manager believes they should consider an exit for the benefit of themselves as well as the team.
“I believe that all the players that we have deserve to stay here for many, many years. The quality they have is exceptional – there are no doubts,” he said.
“But year by year the situation is different because some players accept roles and some don’t. It is not about the quality, it is about accepting sometimes you don’t play and for a short time they can but sometimes they cannot for longer.
“In those moments, those players have to leave. That’s why some players have to be moved, the same with managers or backroom staff. We had two physios here that we were delighted with who decided to move on to Liverpool.
“There are players who – for age, personality, the education that they have, many reasons – they accept all the roles; and there are other ones don’t accept it and when they play it is perfect but when they don’t play it is always a problem with the team. These players have to think, reflect, speak with their agents and the club and decide the best for themselves especially and the club as well.
“That’s why I don’t know what is going to happen next season but now is not the moment. I didn’t think one second about this but Txiki does and at the end of the season we’re going to think about what is the best for next season.”
