Major incident as armed police at serious crash with shotgun in road

A road is likely to be closed “for some time” overnight following a serious crash in Salford.

Police, paramedics and fire crews are currently at the scene on Liverpool Road in Irlam after the incident, thought to have happened at about 8pm.

The collision, which witnesses say involved a motorbike, car and a pedestrian, happened outside St John’s Church.

A shotgun has been pictured in the road and within the police cordon, covered by a green sheet.

Pictures from the scene show a large number of officers at the scene, with a wide cordon in place. Armed police have also been in attendance and shut the road off, with forensic officers seen combing the area in the aftermath.

The shotgun found in the road

Greater Manchester Police have not issued a statement over the incident this evening. It is expected the road will remain shut for a considerable length of time into the early hours of Saturday morning.

One witness, who was among the first on the scene, said the collision involved a biker and a pedestrian. They both suffered head injuries, she said.

“I was there providing first aid,” she told the Manchester Evening News.

“Two men suffered head injuries, one was on a bike and one was a pedestrian. A witness told me a car had hit the bike and drove off hitting the pedestrian.”

A damaged motorbike has been seen within the police cordon, in the church grounds.

Fire crews could also be seen attending a burnt-out car in nearby Cutnook Lane shortly afterwards. It has been reported the vehicle was involved in the incident in Liverpool Road, however this has not been confirmed by police.

Drivers are being asked to find alternative routes and Transport for Greater Manchester has warned drivers to avoid the area.

In a tweet, MancTraffic said: “Liverpool Rd, Irlam serious crash UPDATE: Closure now from Vicarage Rd to Chapel Rd. Likely to be shut for some time.

“Liverpool Rd, Irlam CLOSED either side of Vicarage Rd. Reports of a motorcycle involved by St John’s Church. Police, Ambulance and Fire service on scene.”
