Gareth Southgate has confirmed that Harry Maguire completed another day of training without setback on Thursday, putting him in contention to play against Scotland.

Manchester United captain Maguire has been out of action since he suffered an ankle ligament injury in the 3-1 victory over Aston Villa on May 9.

It saw the near-ever present defender miss the final four games of the Premier League season as well as be restricted to a place on the bench for the Europa League final defeat to Villarreal, though any scenario in which he came on in Gdansk was unlikely.

The injury put Maguire’s involvement in this summer’s rearranged European Championship in doubt but he was still picked in Southgate’s 26-man squad, even though he missed the two warm-up games.

The 28-year-old was also unavailable for the Three Lions’ Euro 2020 opener, as they defeated Croatia 1-0 on Sunday, but has been making good progress on his recovery.

Maguire has trained every day over the last week without aggravating the injury and will be involved in England’s second group game against Scotland on Friday, though it’s not clear if that will be as a starter or on the bench.

“This morning we had 26 players training which is where you want to be,” Southgate said in his pre-match press conference. “Maguire has trained with no reaction.

“Harry will be involved tomorrow, its just a matter of if he is ready to start”

A win at Wembley will see England advance to the knockout stages of the competition with a game to spare and Maguire has declared himself fit for the match.

“I feel good, I’ve been training now,” Maguire said.

“Obviously the injury was a setback club football-wise. Internationally I wanted to come into this with a lot of games under my belt with full fitness, but I feel good. I’m back available, been training and I’m looking forward to it.”

Asked if he was desperate to start against Scotland, he added: “Yeah definitely. Obviously, it’s a big game. I’ve done a few sessions now and feel like my fitness is there, so, like I say, I’m available for the game.”
