The Duke of York has mostly kept himself under the radar over the past 18 months, after stepping down from royal duties in the wake of the Jeffrey Epstein scandal and his disastrous interview with BBC Newsnight. However, he has reportedly decided he wants to wear an Admiral’s uniform to his father’s funeral on Saturday, forcing the Queen to make a decision on which rank he will be. Although Buckingham Palace declined to comment directly on the matter, a spokesman told the Mail Online: “Funeral arrangements are being finalised and we will announce them accordingly.”

Andrew was made honorary Vice-Admiral in the Royal Navy on his 55th birthday in 2015 and was due to become an Admiral last year but offered to defer it until he returned to public duties.

Senior royals receive these promotions in line with a policy that treats them as serving military members.

However, Buckingham Palace asked the Ministry of Defence to defer it in this instance, given that he was not carrying out the duties of a working royal.

Prince Harry will likely be wearing a suit at the funeral, having been stripped of his military appointments as part of his exit deal from the Royal Family with his wife Meghan Markle.

Andrew wearing the Admiral uniform would be in stark contrast to the Duke of Sussex, who will still be able to wear his medals, in line with what military veterans are allowed.

Prince Andrew served in the Royal Navy from 1979 to 2001 and reached the rank of Commander organically, but it is tradition that royals continue to receive military promotions as they get older.

Buckingham Palace said last year; “By convention, the Duke of York would be in line for military promotion on his 60th birthday.

“Following the decision by His Royal Highness to step back from public duties for the foreseeable future, the Duke of York has asked the Ministry of Defence if this promotion might be deterred until such time that His Royal Highness returns to public duty.”

However, 18 months down the line, Andrew has not returned to public duties and there is no update as to whether he has spoken to the FBI, who wish to interview him as a witness in the Epstein case.

This case revolves about convicted sex offender Epstein, who died in prison in 2019 awaiting trial on sex-trafficking charges.

His girlfriend Ghislaine Maxwell has been accused of being a co-conspirator in his trafficking operation and has been charged with sex-trafficking and enticement of minors, which she vehemently denies.

Prince Andrew has been criticised for his friendship with the pair over a number of years, and for staying in Epstein’s house even after he had been convicted of sex crimes.

What’s more, Andrew himself has been accused by Virginia Roberts Giuffre, an alleged sex-trafficking victim of Epstein, of having sex with her three times when she was 17.

Andrew has vehemently denied the allegation.

Buckingham Palace said in a statement: “It is emphatically denied that the Duke of York had any form of sexual contact or relationship with Virginia Roberts.

“Any claim to the contrary is false and without foundation.”

In November 2019, Andrew agreed to be interviewed by Emily Maitlis on BBC Newsnight in what was widely viewed as an absolute disaster for the Duke.

Andrew was criticised for showing an apparent lack of empathy for Epstein’s victims and mocked for claims such as being in a Pizza Express in Woking the time one of the alleged incidents with Virginia Roberts took place.

Following the car-crash interview, Andrew stepped back from royal duties and promised to aid law enforcement with the investigation into the alleged crimes of Epstein and Ms Maxwell, and little has been heard from him since.

This week, the BBC was criticised for interviewing the Duke about his father Prince Philip’s death.

They received 400 complaints about Andrew’s tribute, which was the first time he had spoken in public since stepping back from duties.

Now, the 61-year-old has reportedly sparked a quarrel at Buckingham Palace after he allegedly told his mother the Queen and senior officials he wished to attend the funeral as an Admiral.

Numerous royals will be wearing military dress in accordance with their honorary titles including Prince Charles, Prince William, Prince Edward and Princess Anne.

Prince Harry may be the only senior male royal not in uniform at the funeral.

He no longer holds his honorary titles, which included Captain-General of the Royal Marines, a role the Duke of Edinburgh held for 64 years and Harry for three years.

However, as a former Captain with the Household Cavalry (Blues and Royals), Harry is permitted to wear a morning suit decorated with his medals.
