Sarah, also known by friends and fans as Fergie, declared to be a “great supporter” of Ms Winfrey and her work. The Duchess of York was asked by royal commentator Camilla Tominey what she made of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s two-hour-long tell-all sit-down with the US journalist.

Fergie declined to share her opinion on the explosive interview, but did show her support for the work of Ms Winfrey.

She told the Telegraph Magazine: “All I want to say on this is that Oprah helped me greatly when I went to the US and was interviewed by her.

“I’m a great supporter of Oprah and everything that she does.”

The Duchess of York spoke to Ms Winfrey in 1996, shortly after she ultimate her divorce from Prince Andrew.

At the time, she spoke candidly about life as a member of the Royal Family, saying it was “not a fairytale”.

She continued: “You didn’t marry the fairytale, you married a man.

“You fell in love and married a man, and then you have to come to terms with the fairytale.

“Now it’s not a fairy tale, it’s real life.”

She went on revealing she had found it difficult to get used to Buckingham Palace’s rules.

She said: “The palace from when you look at it from the outside, the windows have to be open in only a certain amount so they are all in line, and I’d come in and throw open all the windows. And no, that was wrong.”

After being asked by Ms Winfrey why she didn’t just “play the game”, she spoke about both hers and Princess Diana’s exit from the Firm.

She said: “You could do that, and if that’s what suits you, then that’s what suits you.

“But Diana and I are like rivers, we want to learn more, we want to go around the corner, we are hungry for more.”

In their interview with Ms Winfrey, Prince Harry and Meghan also detailed why they decided to step down as senior members of the Firm.

The Duke spoke about a “lack of understanding and lack of support”.

He and Meghan also accused the palace of neglect and racism and discussed their relationship with some key members of the Royal Family.

While they spoke highly of the Queen – with Meghan recollecting her joint engagement with Her Majesty in 2018 and saying the monarch had always been wonderful to her – Prince Harry said he had felt “let down” by his father and the relationship with Prince William was one of “space” at that moment.

Fergie is gearing up for the release of her first historical novel Her Heart for a Compass, inspired by the Duchess’ great-great-aunt, Lady Margaret Montagu Douglas Scott.

But the Duchess of York is already a well-established author, having written more than 70 books – including several successful children’s stories.

Speaking about Meghan’s publishing debut with The Bench, Sarah said: “I think it’s wonderful that Meghan has written a children’s book; having done that myself, I know the effort it takes.

“I did have to make my own way in the world when I left the family, and it is not always easy.”

The Duchess, who is the mother of Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie, known to be close to Prince Harry, refused to say whether she empathises with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

She said: “I wouldn’t presume to give advice to Harry and Meghan, except to say to be happy.”
