Roma fans are making it very clear that they do not approve with the manner in which club legend Daniele De Rossi is leaving the Italian capital.

On Tuesday, the club announced that the steely defensive midfielder would be leaving the Giallorossi after 18 seasons at the helm and it’s hard to envision a Roma without him or fellow icon Francesco Totti, who took up a role as a director after hanging up his boots.

Manager Claudio Ranieri acknowledged that the whole situation should have been handled differently and Roma ultras are not taking kindly to the decision not to offer the 35-year old deal.

In fact, no less than 2000 fans have gathered outside the club’s new offices to protest to president James Pallotta over De Rossi’s departure.

“Club icons are now torn down, they are not defended and honoured,” was the message on one banner, while “These ‘directors’ are charlatans without respect!” was another.

A banner from the ultras also read: “AS Roma represents our legend, but only those unworthy of it can call it a business.”

De Rossi wanted to remain at the Stadio Olimpico for a little longer but will now embark on a new chapter away from his beloved Roma.

“I should know where I’ll be going and we’ll see if I can give a lot or a little,” the World Cup winner said in a press conference, via Football Italia.

“I’m still a bit upset about my departure. Football’s our job, there are people who play football and people who make decisions.

“Whoever made the decision, decided this. As a director, probably, if I wanted to, I would’ve made myself stay, but I’ll still try to play football.”
