Claude Puel Sacked After 4-1 Loss To Crystal Palace

Claude Puel Sacked After 4-1 Loss To Crystal Palace - FootyNews.co.uk

Claude Puel’s time at Leicester City is over after just 16 months. The Frenchman was sacked on Sunday morning following Saturday’s 4-1 Premier League loss to Crystal Palace.

The blade has been hanging over Claude Puel’s neck for some time now and finally the guillotine was brought down on his career at Leicester on Sunday morning.

In a statement the club said, Leicester City Football Club has today (Sunday) parted company with Claude Puel, who leaves his position as First Team Manager with immediate effect.

“The Club would like to thank Claude for his efforts in leading the team during his 16 months in the role and wish him well in his future career.

“Assistant Manager Jacky Bonnevay also departs with the Club’s best wishes.

“First Team Coaches Mike Stowell and Adam Sadler, supported by the Club’s established backroom staff, will assume responsibility for the senior squad while the Club begins the process of appointing a new manager.

“The Board will make no further comment until this process is complete.”

On Saturday the Foxes hosted Crystal Palace and capitulated in the second half to lose 4-1, with the game having been level at 1-1 after 69 minutes before a late Wilfried Zaha brace and a penalty from Luka Milivojevic gave Roy Hodgson’s side all three points.

Puel, the former Southampton manager, was booed off at full time with the fans fed up of his style of play and a home record that has seen them win just four times at the King Power Stadium this season, scoring only 14 times in 13 games, only Palace and Huddersfield Town have scored less home games.

On Sunday morning the news came through that Puel had been sacked, less than a year and a half after taking the job.

The Foxes appointed the former Nice manager in October 2017 after a poor start to the season under Craig Shakespeare, who’d taken over from Claudio Ranieri.

He didn’t really have a good first season but took the club away from the relegation zone. Despite a ninth place finish rumours started that he would lose his job.

Many neutrals have pointed towards a decent league position as to why they have been baffled at criticism of the manager from Leicester fans however they are now only eight points above the relegation zone and in 12th place.

Puel hasn’t had the best relationship with Jamie Vardy, his side hasn’t scored many goals, as was a criticism at Southampton, and their home form is one of the worst in the league.

It has seemed inevitable that he would be sacked for some time, there was no coming back from Saturday’s defeat.
