Conor McGregor Would Take UFC Co-Main Event If He Gets His Shares
Conor McGregor says he is content with taking a UFC co-main event slot but only if he gets shares in the company.
The Irishman’s UFC suspension is lifted in April and it was widely reported that UFC were preparing for a mega-fight between McGregor and ‘Cowboy’ Donald Cerrone, who is well up for the fight and has done plenty of teasing.
However, negotiations for the fight have apparently not progressed and reports indicated it stemmed from McGregor not willing to budge from a main event spot.
But during a 30 minute Q&A in Chicago as part of a promotional tour for his Proper 12 whiskey over the St Patrick’s Day festivities, McGregor says he’s willing as long as he gets what he wants in return.
“I’m ready to fight, I’ve said that,” he said, as per Mike Pendleton of BJPenn.com.
“No problem. If the UFC wants me to slide into that co-main event slot and help, what that is, if I slide into the co-main event it’s boosting their brand over fighter rhetoric that they have.
“There’s no problem with that. If they want me to push that and I have no problem pushing that, give me my rightful shares in the UFC company. That’s all I ask. You can put me on the first fight of ESPN+ but just give me my shares. So, we’ll see what happens.”
It’s not the first time McGregor has talked about wanting shares in the company, and the fact that his whiskey brand was a key sponsor for his fight with Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 229, even gracing the canvas of the Octagon.
When will McGregor’s return happen, then? Well, the 30-year old reckons he’ll back in the mix around July time.
“We’re currently in negotiations,” McGregor told ABC-7’s Larry Mowry.
“We’re aiming for July – we’ll see what happens. I am staying ready. This morning I was doing incline sprints on the treadmill on my program, the McGregor F.A.S.T. program, staying in a hotel room. So we’re staying on it, getting work in as we go.”
