Oxford United right back, Tony McMahon, will be among those leaving the club in the summer. Despite having 12 months left on his contract, the 33-year-old will likely end up with a move back north.

This Season at Oxford

McMahon arrived at the Kassam with his experience being a key factor. But the move was delayed by the death of his father earlier in the summer, whilst distance from his young family was also a strain.

The full-back started just ten league games for Karl Robinson, before being loaned out to Scunthorpe United in January.

A permanent move to the Iron could have been an option, but the club suffered relegation to League Two and will need to keep a closer eye on their wage bill next term.

Robinson told the Oxford Mail: “We think it’s going to be best for him to stay up north. I think it’s what he prefers for his family as well.

“Obviously with Scunthorpe going down, it’s going to make it an awful lot more difficult to do that.”

“You’d imagine their wage bill would decrease. We’ll have those conversations over the next few weeks.”

“But Tony will have a decision to make in the summer. I don’t foresee him coming here and playing here.”

Where Next for McMahon?

When looking back at the signing of McMahon, Robinson admitted, “It just didn’t work out.”

“You have to make sure you deal with it immediately, rather than making what could have been a bad signing and make it into a good signing.

“I don’t think that would have worked, so we admitted the mistakes we made, but no-one could have foreseen what occurred with Tony’s private life.”

The loan move to Glandford Park allowed the full back more game time. Reunited with former Bradford City boss, Stuart McCall, McMahon seemed settled.

But despite a strong start, injuries and the sacking of the manager hindered any progression.

Relegated on the final day and with the arrival of Paul Hurst as the clubs new manager, it is unknown whether McMahon will stay with the North Lincolnshire side.

As for the U’s, they’d be looking to find a club to avoid any news for a settlement being paid.
