Thibaut Courtois hasn’t shirked away from answering why Real Madrid are so far off rivals Barcelona this season. The goalkeeper has attributed things down to two players, though it’s not quite their fault.

It’s a lot of players dream to play for Real Madrid, the club is steeped in history and even in recent years it’s hardly doing badly on the winning trophies front, after all they have won the last three Champions Leagues.

Despite being the best team in Europe for the past three seasons though they are yet to be able to dominate Spain, with Los Blancos winning only one La Liga title under Zinedine Zidane.

Los Blancos won’t be adding any more league titles this season either as they currently sit third in the league, 10 points behind their bitter rivals Barcelona.

A lot has changed this season for Real with two managerial changes since the end of last season and the loss of Cristiano Ronaldo to Juventus.

They also changed goalkeeper with Thibaut Courtois earning his dream move from Chelsea in the summer. He might be a new recruit but the goalie is willing to make his opinions known.

Speaking to Belgian newspaper Het Nieuwsblad, via Goal, blamed a lack of a goalscorer for their issues, saying:

“If Ronaldo leaves and there is no real top attacker in his place, you know that it will be a difficult year. You take 50 goals away.

“You hope that Benzema or Bale will score more and partly they do that too. We are making progress in the last few weeks.”

As the former Atletico Madrid keeper rightly points out the 13 time Champions League winners really didn’t replace Ronaldo in the summer.

The club’s all time top scorer left for around £90 million but only signed Mariano up front and the 25 year old has started just one La Liga game this season.

Florentino Perez brought Vinicius Junior to the club, although the deal was done 18 months ago, but a big name move never came.

It’s expected that will change this summer with Eden Hazard and Neymar once again heavily rumoured to be potential targets for Real.

Who should eventually replace Ronaldo at the Bernabeu?
