Ronaldinho's 14-Year-Old Son Signs First Professional Contract

Last year, Ronaldinho’s son Joao Mendes hid his identity at a Cruzeiro trial because he didn’t want the status of his father to influence the club’s final decision on his talents. It was the start of something special.

The talented youngster made a huge impression at the try-out and reportedly ‘charmed the scouts.’

Mendes would go on to flourish in the academy system, so much so that he has recently signed a five year contract with the Brazilian outfit.

That’s right. He even has his father’s smile.

Cruzeiro’s official website announced the news earlier, while director of football Amarildo Ribeiro highlighted his incredible talent:

“Today, we signed the contract of João Mendes, who is a promising player with interesting characteristics and who, I believe, will soon be integrating our professional team,” he said.

“He is a player that has a good physical size, a high technical quality. A player who can play both as an area player and as a second striker. He is a player who, even with the big size, has speed and finishes very well.”

Mendes himself also spoke of his delight at signing a contract at a club that has shown a huge amount of faith in him:

“It was the team that opened the door for me. I have a great affection for the club. The workouts are very good, the structure is very good. It’s the biggest club in Brazil and it’s a pleasure to play here,” he said.

“It’s a very happy day. Just thank the board for the confidence you have been giving. I thank God also for me being able to play every day.”
